Comparison of Internet Service Tariffs
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we study the pricing of Internet services under monopoly and duopoly environments using a game-theoretic model in which a service provider and users all try to maximize their payoffs. First, we compare a few popular pricing schemes, including flat, volume-based, two-part and nonlinear tariffs with respect to revenue, social welfare and user surplus. We perform a sensitivity study of these schemes to the estimation errors. In the duopoly situation, we formulate a simple normal form game between two service providers and study their equilibrium behaviors. Finally, we consider universal service for Internet service and its impacts on subscribership.

Pricing and Financial Issues in Marketing Modeling Consumer Choice among Three-part Tariffs
In recent years, firms in a number of industries have introduced wide menus of pricing plans that grant access to a virtually identical product under different pricing schemes. These menus of tariffs allow consumers to self-select into the tariff that best fits their demand. They include pure pay-per-use tariffs, tariffs where the consumer pays an access price, and a marginal price only for usa...
متن کاملA Comparison of Nonlinear Pricing Preference Models for Digital Services
We review and empirically compare a variety of hierarchical Bayes models that use the data obtained from discrete choice experiments to capture usage behavior under twopart tariffs, as are commonly used in service industries such as telecommunication, cloud computing, and online music downloads. The models enable the simultaneous prediction of consumers' service purchase-, tariff choice-, and u...
متن کاملThumbtribes: Low Bandwidth, Location-Aware Communication
Mobile application developers need to design their applications with the constraints of the network in mind. In comparison to inexpensive home broadband networks, mobile networks often exhibit high levels of latency and have limited bandwidth. Another significant difference between these networks is the cost of transporting data. Mobile network operators often apply usage tariffs, especially if...
متن کاملData caps and Two-sided Pricing: Evaluating Managed Service Business Models
With the transition from a flat rate dominated pricing regime towards volume-based tariffs, bandwidth is often bundled with specific allowances or overuse-charges for data consumption. One central element in many new telecommunications tariffs is the implementation of data caps, which are a common tool to address several challenges telecommunications providers face in today’s markets. In this c...

Pricing schemes for Internet services have turned out to be of crucial influence for the competitiveness of Internet Service Providers (ISP). Despite of this urgent demand, there is still no standard tariff scheme that solves the so-called “feasibility problem”, i.e. ensures simultaneously technical feasibility, economic efficiency and user acceptance. This paper investigates the reason for the...
